How German pay is taxed in 2026
Your employer withholds wage tax (Lohnsteuer) from every payslip. It depends on your tax class and is calculated on your pay after standard allowances; the first €12,348 of taxable income is tax-free. A 5.5% solidarity surcharge is added only when your annual wage tax exceeds €20,350.
This calculator shows the wage tax withheld over the year. If you file a tax return, your final income tax can be lower or higher.
Social insurance contributions
Employees and employers share four social insurance contributions. The employee shares are shown below; contributions stop at the annual ceilings.
| Insurance | Employee rate | Applies up to |
|---|---|---|
| Pension | 9.3% | €101,400 |
| Unemployment | 1.3% | €101,400 |
| Health | 7.3% + half of your insurer's additional rate | €69,750 |
| Long-term care | 1.8% (+0.6% if childless and 23 or older) | €69,750 |
Common questions
- Which tax class should I choose?
- Single employees are in class I and single parents in class II. Married couples choose between IV/IV and III/V. Class VI applies to a second job. The class changes how much is withheld during the year, not the couple's final tax.
- What is the additional health insurance contribution?
- Each statutory health insurer charges its own additional rate on top of the general 14.6%. You pay half of it. The calculator starts with the 2026 average of 2.9%; replace it with your insurer's rate.
- Is privately insured pay covered?
- No. The calculator assumes statutory health and long-term care insurance. Private insurance changes both the contributions and the wage tax.
